Japan has introduced new 10,000 yen ($62), 5,000 yen, and 1,000 yen banknotes featuring 3D holographic technology, marking the first redesign in 20 years. These bills honor historical figures such as Eiichi Shibusawa, Umeko Tsuda, and Shibasaburo Kitasato, and employ advanced anti-counterfeiting measures. The Bank of Japan plans to distribute 1.6 trillion yen worth of these notes initially, with a total of nearly 7.5 billion new banknotes to be printed by March 2025. Despite the rise of digital payments, Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda emphasized the enduring importance of cash. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida praised the new notes for their advanced security features and potential economic boost. The older banknotes will remain valid as the new ones gradually enter broader circulation.
