SMU has officially named Kevin Jennings as the starting quarterback, replacing Preston Stone after a three-week competition. Coach Rhett Lashlee's decision followed Jennings' performance in the recent game against BYU, where he was more effective than Stone, who struggled with three consecutive three-and-outs. Jennings, who previously led the Mustangs to an AAC Championship victory after Stone's injury in 2023, completed 15-of-32 passes for 140 yards and rushed for 38 yards in the BYU game. Although Stone began the season as the starter, his inconsistency prompted the coaching staff to commit to Jennings for the remainder of the season. The Mustangs, now 2-1, will face their rival TCU in Jennings' first start of the season on September 21.
