Barb Byrum Enters 2026 Michigan Secretary of State Race
Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum, a Democrat and former state representative, has formally launched her campaign for Michigan Secretary of State in the 2026 election. Byrum, who has overseen 40 elections in her 12 years as county clerk, emphasizes her commitment to secure, accessible, and fair elections, pledging to combat election denialism and enhance customer service at Secretary of State offices. She is the second Democrat in the race, joining Deputy Secretary of State Aghogho Edevbie, as incumbent Jocelyn Benson is term-limited and running for governor. Byrum also highlights her advocacy for election workers and her role in officiating Michigan's first same-sex marriage ceremony. No Republican has declared a candidacy for the position. The Democratic nominee will be chosen at a statewide party convention, expected as early as April 2026.
