Palestinian Football Star Killed Waiting for Aid
Suleiman al-Obeid, known as the 'Palestinian Pelé' and a celebrated former national footballer, was killed by Israeli fire while waiting for humanitarian aid in Rafah, southern Gaza, according to the Palestinian Football Association (PFA). Al-Obeid, aged 41, was fatally shot at an aid distribution site, underscoring the severe impact of the conflict on Palestinian sports. The PFA reports that at least 662 sportspeople and their relatives have been killed since the war began, and nearly 300 sports facilities have been damaged or destroyed. Al-Obeid had an illustrious career with 19 to 24 caps for the Palestine national team and played for several top clubs. His death has drawn international condemnation, including from Eric Cantona, and highlighted the broader humanitarian crisis, with over 1,300 civilians killed near aid distribution sites. He is survived by his wife and five children.
