In a surprising encounter, a hunter in Idaho was attacked by a grizzly bear while hunting elk with a friend in Island Park. The bear knocked the hunter down and bit him, prompting both men to use their sidearms to shoot and kill the bear in self-defense. After the incident on September 1, the injured hunter was airlifted to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials from Idaho Fish and Game confirmed that the hunters acted appropriately during the attack, which occurred at close range. Regional Supervisor Matt Pieron expressed gratitude that both hunters survived and wished the injured man a speedy recovery. The agency reminded hunters of the importance of being cautious in areas where grizzly bears may be present.
