West Nile Virus Mosquitoes Found in KY, ND Cities

Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus have been detected in Louisville, Kentucky, and Grand Forks, North Dakota. Infected mosquitoes were found in Louisville's Tyler Park and Highlands neighborhoods, prompting local authorities to schedule fogging and advise residents to use insect repellent, wear protective clothing, and avoid peak mosquito activity times. Grand Forks officials also detected positive samples and recommend similar precautions, including limiting outdoor activity at dusk and dawn and eliminating standing water. No human cases have been reported in either location so far this year. Health officials warn that most infected people are asymptomatic, but less than 1% can develop serious illnesses like encephalitis or meningitis, particularly among older adults and those with preexisting conditions. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and take preventive measures.
