Hall of Fame Coach George Raveling Dies at 88
George Raveling, a Hall of Fame college basketball coach and influential Nike executive, died at age 88 after battling cancer. He coached for 22 seasons at Washington State, Iowa, and USC, earning three Pac-10 Coach of the Year awards and leading multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. Raveling was an assistant coach for the U.S. men's basketball teams that won gold in 1984 and bronze in 1988 Olympics. He played a pivotal role in convincing Michael Jordan to sign with Nike, helping launch the iconic Jordan Brand. Beyond basketball, Raveling participated in the 1963 March on Washington and owned an original copy of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, which he later donated to Villanova. After retiring from coaching, he became Nike's global basketball sports marketing director and was inducted into both the College Basketball Hall of Fame and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
