Police Fatally Shoot Knife-Wielding Man in Launceston
A 34-year-old man was shot and killed by police in Launceston's CBD after he threatened the public with a knife and refused to disarm despite negotiation attempts. Police used capsicum spray and ultimately shot him twice in the chest when he continued to advance towards them. He was taken to Launceston General Hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries. One officer sustained a non-life-threatening injury during the incident. Tasmania Police Assistant Commissioner Adrian Bodnar described the event as traumatic and stressed that lethal force is a last resort for officers. Investigations by police professional standards and the coroner are ongoing, with support plans in place for the involved officers and their families.
