BBC Commissions Small Prophets Comedy Series in Manchester
Small Prophets is a new six-part BBC comedy series created, written, directed by, and starring BAFTA-winning Mackenzie Crook, set and filmed in Manchester. The show follows eccentric Michael Sleep (Pearce Quigley), who leads a mundane life after the disappearance of his wife Clea seven years ago, until his father Brian (Michael Palin) shares an alchemical recipe to create Homunculi—magical spirits that predict the future—to answer if Michael will see Clea again. Michael's journey is supported by his young workmate Kacey (Lauren Patel), forming an unlikely friendship fueled partly by their mutual dislike of their store manager, Gordon (Crook). The series blends live-action and visually stunning animation to explore themes of friendship, hope, magic, and secrecy within a suburban cul-de-sac, while also showcasing the quirky dynamics with nosy neighbors (Sophie Willan, Jon Pointing). This project marks a reunion for Crook with producer Gill Isles and BAFTA-winning animators Ainslie Henderson and Will Anderson, reflecting Crook's long-standing passion for the story which has been in development for nearly a decade. Small Prophets is expected to air later this year and continues Crook's tradition of combining comedy with magical realism and heartfelt storytelling.
