Punjab Floods Disrupt Soil, Threaten Rabi Crops Across Multiple Districts
Punjab is undergoing a comprehensive biodiversity survey under the IUCN National Survey Programme, with nearly 90% of the flora survey completed and a migratory bird census scheduled, although recent floods have disrupted habitats and may affect population estimates. Concurrently, Punjab Agricultural University studies reveal that the floods have drastically altered the soil profile and texture across multiple districts, depositing up to several feet of red sand and silt from the Himalayan foothills. This has caused nutrient imbalances, compacted soil layers, and formation of impermeable layers that could hinder water infiltration and root growth, raising concerns for the upcoming rabi cropping season. Despite some benefits from mineral-rich sediments, the altered soil composition poses challenges for fertility and crop viability, prompting PAU to advise corrective measures such as deep tillage and soil mixing. Authorities have mobilized teams to test soil samples and guide farmers in affected districts to restore soil health and maintain agricultural productivity. These environmental and agricultural impacts highlight the floods' significant disruption to Punjab's ecosystems and farming foundation.
