Godstone Faces Major Crisis with Expanding Sinkholes

A massive sinkhole, which first appeared on February 17 in Godstone, Surrey, has expanded to 65 feet, leading to the evacuation of around 30 homes due to safety concerns. The sinkhole originated after a water main burst, and experts are conducting borehole testing to assess the situation and rebuild the road. The area, built on a former sand quarry, is particularly vulnerable due to its sandy geology, which weakens when wet. The local council has declared a major incident, and a second sinkhole has also developed, exacerbating the situation.
