The Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) ruled that a potential strike or lockout by approximately 9,300 employees from CN Rail and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) would not pose an immediate threat to public health and safety, thus allowing the possibility of a work stoppage starting August 22. This decision follows the board's determination that rail service is not considered 'essential' under the Canada Labour Code. Despite concerns from shippers and producers about significant economic disruptions, such as halted freight traffic and clogged ports, the CIRB emphasized that inconvenience and economic hardship are not factors in their ruling. Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon has urged both parties to continue negotiations to avoid a strike. The ruling has caused anxiety in various industries, with some businesses already rerouting shipments in anticipation of potential disruptions. The decision was made after former labour minister Seamus O'Regan requested an evaluation of the strike's impact on public safety back in May.
