Vietnam, Russia Sign Agreement on Nuclear Cooperation
Vietnam is actively seeking to revive its nuclear energy program, which was shelved in 2016 due to cost and safety concerns. During a recent visit by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh urged Rosatom to assist with the development of nuclear power, highlighting the need for energy security and environmental goals. Rosatom's CEO, Alexey Likhachev, expressed readiness to collaborate on building nuclear facilities and localizing technology in Vietnam. The two nations signed agreements to enhance cooperation in the nuclear sector and also to transfer a maritime research vessel. The Vietnamese government aims to complete its first nuclear plant by 2030 as part of its strategy to meet growing energy demands and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. These developments signal a strengthening of ties between Vietnam and Russia amidst ongoing geopolitical shifts.
