Chiefs Legend Abner Haynes Dies at 86
Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame running back Abner Haynes, the first AFL Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, passed away at age 86. Haynes, an original member of the Dallas Texans who relocated to Kansas City in 1963, was a versatile player excelling in rushing, receiving, and returning, totaling 3,810 rushing yards, 2,739 receiving yards, and 1,924 return yards. He led the AFL in various statistics, including rushing yards and touchdowns. Beyond his athletic achievements, Haynes was a pioneer as one of the first Black athletes to play on an integrated college football team in Texas and remained active in community initiatives post-retirement. Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt praised Haynes for his leadership and lasting legacy. Haynes was inducted into multiple Halls of Fame and had his jersey retired by both the Chiefs and the University of North Texas.
