UK Study Finds Plant-Based Dog Foods Lack Complete Nutrients
A series of studies led by Rebecca Brociek at the University of Nottingham analyzed 31 commercially available dry dog foods in the UK, including meat-based, plant-based, and veterinary diets, to assess their nutritional adequacy. The research found that while plant-based dog foods generally provide protein and amino acids comparable to meat-based options, they often fall short in meeting guidelines for iodine and B vitamins, though these deficiencies can be addressed through supplementation or reformulation by manufacturers. Notably, none of the tested dog foods met all nutritional standards set by regulatory bodies such as the European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF), with many veterinary diets designed for kidney conditions showing significant deficiencies in essential amino acids. Contrary to common assumptions, plant-based dog foods were not nutritionally inferior to meat-based foods, and in some amino acid metrics, they performed better. These findings suggest that with proper formulation and supplementation, plant-based diets can be a viable option for dogs, aligning with environmental and ethical considerations driving changes in pet nutrition. The studies highlight the need for improved nutritional standards and more rigorous testing across all dog food categories to ensure canine health is fully supported.
