The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has launched a 'Central School Control Room' to enhance student safety by monitoring CCTV footage across municipal schools, a move initiated after the sexual assault of two young girls in a local school. Inaugurated by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on September 5, the control room is equipped to monitor nearly 1,000 cameras, including those from 200 installed in 36 schools catering to around 10,000 students. The initiative aims to proactively address security concerns and create a safer educational environment, with plans to eventually include private institutions. CM Shinde emphasized the importance of real-time surveillance and encouraged other municipal bodies in Maharashtra to adopt similar measures. He also highlighted the state's commitment to stricter regulations for student safety through the 'Shakti' law, which strengthens protections against crimes targeting women and children. Additional recommendations include conducting thorough background checks of staff and implementing complaint boxes for grievances.
