Connecticut Proposes Minority Stake to Keep Sun Amid Relocation Talks
The state of Connecticut is actively working to keep the WNBA's Connecticut Sun franchise within the state by proposing to acquire a minority ownership stake, offering a valuation higher than the WNBA's current $250 million offer. The state's plan includes hosting home games both at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville and at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, with the latter being centrally located and expected to host more games over time. Additionally, the proposal involves the construction and leasing of a new practice facility in Hartford. This move comes after the Mohegan Tribe, the current owners, had reached a tentative agreement to sell the team to Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca for $325 million, which would have moved the team to Boston. Connecticut officials, including Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz, emphasized the strong local fan base and community ties as reasons to keep the team in Connecticut, highlighting the economic, cultural, and aspirational value the Sun bring to the state. The proposal is still under negotiation with the Mohegan Tribe and requires league approval, but it signals a serious commitment to retaining the franchise in Connecticut amid relocation rumors.
