Amnesty Reports Over 10,000 Killed, 638 Villages Sacked Under Tinubu Across Multiple Nigerian States
Amnesty International has reported that over 10,217 people have been killed in violent attacks by gunmen, bandits, and terrorist groups across several Nigerian states since President Bola Tinubu assumed office two years ago, with Benue and Plateau states suffering the highest death tolls. The organization criticized the Nigerian government for failing to protect citizens and allowing the emergence of new armed groups while hundreds of villages have been sacked, warning of a worsening security and humanitarian crisis. President Tinubu's administration has defended its security efforts, claiming troops have restored order in key areas, but Amnesty International insists the situation has deteriorated. The National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) strongly rejected Amnesty's report as misleading, asserting that many figures were inconsistent with their verified data and inviting Amnesty International for discussions to clarify the findings. The ongoing violence also includes increased attacks by Boko Haram and clashes in Nigeria's Middle Belt, compounding the complex security challenges. The Amnesty director called on President Tinubu to urgently address the endemic security crisis that has led to massive loss of life and ongoing instability.
