German authorities have arrested a 27-year-old Syrian man in Hof, Bavaria, on charges of planning a machete attack against Bundeswehr soldiers during their lunch break. The suspect, allegedly a follower of radical Islamic ideology, intended to kill as many soldiers as possible to attract attention and create public fear. He acquired two machetes for the planned attack and is currently in police custody. This arrest comes in the wake of other violent incidents in Germany, including a mass stabbing in Solingen claimed by ISIS, which has heightened immigration and security concerns. In response, Germany has extended temporary border controls, testing European unity ahead of upcoming elections where security and immigration are key issues.
