Elswick-Hopper Bicycle Legacy in Barton

Fred Hopper began making bicycles in Barton, North Lincolnshire, in 1890 and acquired the Elswick Cycle Company in 1913, creating the Elswick‑Hopper brand. The company grew into a major manufacturer employing more than 800 people and exported bicycles to markets including India and China. A new exhibition at Baysgarth House, curated by The Ropewalk charity, traces this history with photographs and owners' stories and notes that some original Elswick‑Hopper buildings still survive in Barton.
