UN Security Council Urges Rwanda to Halt M23 Support

The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution calling for Rwanda to cease its support for the M23 rebel group in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and to withdraw its troops without preconditions. The resolution, driven by France, emphasizes the need for immediate diplomatic talks between the DRC and Rwanda to achieve a lasting peace. The situation in eastern DRC has escalated, with M23 rebels capturing significant territories and displacing nearly a million people. The Council condemned all attacks against civilians and humanitarian personnel, and reaffirmed support for the UN mission in the region. In response to the conflict, the U.S. imposed sanctions on Rwandan officials linked to the M23, which Rwanda labeled as unjustified interference. Rwanda maintains that sanctions will not resolve the conflict and stresses the importance of African-led solutions to restore stability in the region.
