Academy Awards Introduces Stunt Design Category for 2028

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the introduction of a new award category for Achievement in Stunt Design, set to debut at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028. This decision recognizes the vital role of stunt work in filmmaking, a move long advocated for by industry professionals. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang emphasized the importance of honoring the contributions of stunt artists in their joint statement. While films released in 2027 will be eligible for this award, specific eligibility and voting rules are expected to be unveiled in 2027. This new category follows the recent addition of the Achievement in Casting award, which will be presented for the first time at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards. The Academy has previously acknowledged stunt performers with honorary Oscars, but this marks the first time they will have a competitive category.
