Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, known as Tommy Robinson, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for contempt of court after breaching an injunction related to libelous statements about Syrian refugee Jamal Hijazi. The injunction was imposed in 2021 following a successful libel lawsuit against Robinson, who continued to make false allegations despite the court's order. During the sentencing at Woolwich Crown Court, Judge Jeremy Johnson emphasized that Robinson's breaches were deliberate and undermined the rule of law. Robinson's lawyer argued that his client acted out of a desire to uphold free speech, while the Solicitor General's office criticized him for repeatedly defying court orders. In addition to this case, Robinson has a history of legal troubles, including previous convictions and allegations of inflaming social tensions. He has also been linked to far-right movements and activities in both the UK and Europe.
