Camp Mystic Director Dies Saving Girls in Flood
Richard 'Dick' Eastland, longtime co-owner and director of the girls-only Christian Camp Mystic in Kerr County, Texas, died while attempting to rescue campers during unprecedented flash flooding from the Guadalupe River. Eastland was swept away while trying to save girls in a cabin, with his death confirmed by both family and local officials. The floods have caused catastrophic damage at the camp, washing away cabins and leaving dozens of campers missing or unaccounted for. Statewide, the death toll has risen to between 43 and 59, including several children, as rescue and recovery efforts continue. Eastland, remembered as a father figure and for his dedication to Camp Mystic over nearly 50 years, is being mourned by the camp and local communities. His wife, Tweety, was found safe after the disaster.
