US Pledges $55M to Strengthen Indo-Pacific Maritime Security Amid Regional Tensions
The United States announced a $55 million funding package to strengthen maritime law enforcement and security for Indo-Pacific nations, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Pacific Island states. This was declared during a high-level ministerial meeting co-hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and allies such as Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the Philippines, aiming to counter maritime threats and uphold a free and open South China Sea amid China's aggressive claims. The meeting gathered over 35 countries to discuss challenges like protecting shipping lanes, critical undersea infrastructure, and combating illegal fishing and trafficking. The funding will enhance partner countries' capacity to monitor waters, enforce sovereign rights, and disrupt illicit maritime activities, building on over $1.5 billion the U.S. has provided since 2017. The initiative reflects a growing coalition focused on preserving international maritime law and collective defense of vital sea lanes critical to trillions of dollars in global trade. Philippine officials, including President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., emphasized the importance of strong defense ties with the U.S. to protect the West Philippine Sea region.
