Sofia Koval, a 14-year-old girl recently moved from Ukraine, has been charged as an adult with manslaughter for the fatal beating of her 79-year-old grandmother, Yevheniia Koval, in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. The incident occurred on May 23, when paramedics found the elderly woman unresponsive with multiple bruises, head trauma, and internal bleeding. Prosecutors decided to charge the teen as an adult due to the severity of the crime, although juvenile sanctions remain a possibility. Koval, who has shown behavioral issues attributed to trauma from the war in Ukraine, allegedly confessed to using a belt and her grandmother's walker in the attack. The maximum penalty for the manslaughter charge is 15 years in prison, but given her age, she could face juvenile sanctions or supervision until the age of 21.
