India Ramps Up Response Amid Mild Covid Uptick

India is seeing a mild rise in Covid-19 cases, with over 250 active cases reported nationwide as of late May 2025, largely concentrated in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. Most infections are mild and managed at home, while hospitals are increasing preparedness with adequate beds, supplies, and testing capabilities. The dominant variant is JN.1, though isolated cases of NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 have also been detected, none of which are classified as high risk by the WHO. Recent deaths, such as a 21-year-old in Thane and an 84-year-old in Bengaluru, involved patients with significant comorbidities. Health authorities stress the situation remains under control, advocating vigilance and adherence to hygiene measures, especially for vulnerable populations. Surveillance and testing have been intensified in areas of large gatherings and travel, including Uttarakhand and Delhi, to mitigate further outbreaks.
