The European Union will implement an electronic Entry/Exit System (EES) on November 10, 2024, replacing physical passport stamps for non-EU travelers with digital biometric checks. This system will scan travelers' faces and fingerprints upon entry and exit, enhancing security by making it harder for individuals to use fake identities. EU Commissioner Ylva Johansson emphasized that the digital checks will streamline border processes and help identify overstays and irregular migration. Alongside the EES, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will be introduced in 2025, requiring travelers from 60 visa-free countries to apply for authorization for a fee. While this transition aims to improve efficiency, concerns remain about potential travel delays during the system's rollout. The move signifies a broader shift towards digital border management within the Schengen area, impacting millions of travelers annually.
