Olympics: Schoenmaker Wins Gold, Zuma Expelled
At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Tatjana Schoenmaker of South Africa won gold in the 100 meters breaststroke, adding to her previous gold in the 200 meters from Tokyo 2021. The U.S. men's 4x200m freestyle relay team, including Ridgefield’s Kieran Smith, won a silver medal with a time of 7:00.78, finishing behind Great Britain and ahead of Australia. Regan Smith of Lakeville also secured a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke, finishing close behind Australian Kaylee McKeown, who set an Olympic record. Meanwhile, political tensions in Africa saw former South African president Jacob Zuma expelled from the ANC and 36 opposition members in Uganda charged with terrorism. In other Olympic events, New Zealand's equestrian team and various athletes continue their competitions with mixed results, including near-perfect performances by the Black Ferns Sevens in rugby sevens pool play.
