Nearly 7% US Air Travelers Lack REAL ID as Enforcement Begins Nationwide
The REAL ID enforcement deadline took effect on May 7, requiring travelers to present a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or an acceptable alternative, such as a passport, at airport security checkpoints. Despite this, nearly 7% of U.S. travelers remain unprepared, causing delays and confusion at airports nationwide as TSA implements enhanced security measures. The TSA has deployed advanced screening technologies to improve security and efficiency and emphasized that passports, even if expired within two years, can be used domestically as an alternative, though not recommended. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that travelers without a REAL ID will face additional scrutiny but will not be denied boarding. The enforcement is part of a post-9/11 security measure aimed at preventing identity fraud, especially with the anticipation of record passenger volumes during upcoming major events like the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics. While the REAL ID Act aims to strengthen federal security, concerns remain about privacy and the burden on travelers who must obtain compliant identification.
