Meta, XGS Energy Sign 150MW Geothermal Deal in New Mexico

Meta has partnered with geothermal company XGS Energy to develop a 150-megawatt geothermal power project in New Mexico, aiming to supply clean, reliable energy to support its data center operations and AI infrastructure. The project, expected to be operational by 2030 in two phases, will connect to the PNM electric grid and increase geothermal electricity production in the state by a factor of ten, leveraging New Mexico's abundant hot rock resources. XGS Energy’s innovative closed-loop geothermal technology operates without using groundwater, enabling energy production from dry hot rock formations that were previously unsuitable for geothermal development. This deal reflects Meta’s broader strategy to secure sustainable, round-the-clock power for its expanding data center needs amid growing AI demands. The partnership highlights New Mexico’s emerging role as a hub for data centers and clean energy, with geothermal energy positioned as a significant contributor to the region’s energy mix.
