PMD Warns Torrential Rains, Flash Floods Across Pakistan, Rajasthan, Nepal
Pakistan is bracing for widespread torrential rains and thunderstorms from August 23 to 29, driven by strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, combined with a westerly wave impacting northern and upper parts of the country. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that heavy rains could cause flash floods, urban flooding, and landslides, particularly in vulnerable and hilly regions such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and parts of Punjab and Sindh. Karachi is facing severe disruptions with ongoing power outages, school closures, and public hospitals operating on minimal staff due to the heavy rains, and over ten rain-related deaths have been reported, including electrocutions linked to exposed underground cables, prompting legal action against the power utility. Neighboring regions, including parts of Rajasthan in India and hilly provinces of Nepal, are also experiencing increased rainfall and potential flooding risks due to monsoon activity. Authorities in all affected areas are urging residents to stay vigilant, adopt safety measures, and avoid unnecessary travel amid these hazardous weather conditions. The situation underscores the continuing impact of the monsoon season across South Asia with elevated risks of natural disasters and infrastructure challenges.
