The U.S. Justice Department has filed a civil lawsuit against Singaporean companies Grace Ocean Private Ltd. and Synergy Marine Private Ltd., seeking over $100 million in damages related to the March collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge caused by the cargo ship Dali. The lawsuit alleges negligence, claiming that the companies sent an unseaworthy vessel with an ill-prepared crew, which led to the ship losing power and crashing into the bridge, resulting in the deaths of six construction workers and disrupting port operations for months. Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized that the costs should not fall on taxpayers but on the responsible parties. Recovery efforts included removing approximately 50,000 tons of debris to reopen the port. The lawsuit aims not only to recover cleanup costs but also to impose punitive damages to deter future negligence. The ship's owners had previously sought to limit their liability to under $44 million, but the Justice Department argues this should not absolve them of full financial responsibility for the disaster.
