Eagle S Crew Planned Further Baltic Sabotage
The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation revealed that the crew of the detained oil tanker Eagle S, suspected of damaging undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, intended to cut additional cables and pipelines before their capture. During the incident, the vessel had already damaged the Estlink 2 power line and four telecommunications cables by dragging its anchor over 100 kilometers along the seabed. Authorities intervened as the crew was preparing to target the Estlink 1 energy cable and the BalticConnector gas pipeline. Risto Lohi, head of the investigation, indicated there was an imminent threat to critical underwater infrastructure. In total, nine crew members, including a Georgian captain and sailors from India and Georgia, are under investigation, with travel bans imposed on eight of them. This incident is part of a broader trend of disturbances to Baltic Sea infrastructure, with other vessels, such as the Chinese freighter Yi Peng 3, also implicated in similar sabotage activities.
