DermaRite Issues Nationwide Recall Over Bacterial Contamination Risk
DermaRite Industries has issued a nationwide recall of multiple lots of its skincare and handwashing products, including DermaKleen, DermaSarra, KleenFoam, and PeriGiene, after they tested positive for the bacterium Burkholderia cepacia. This bacterium, commonly found in soil and water, poses little risk to healthy individuals but can cause serious, potentially life-threatening infections such as sepsis in immunocompromised people or those caring for them. The recalled products, which are used in both everyday and medical settings, include antiseptic soaps, antimicrobial cleansers, and itch-relief creams distributed throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. DermaRite has not received any reports of adverse events related to the recall but has advised consumers to discontinue use immediately and consult healthcare providers if they experience any problems. Distributors and customers have been instructed to examine and destroy affected inventory according to protocols. Consumers seeking more information or assistance with the recall can contact DermaRite directly or report adverse effects to the FDA's MedWatch program.
