New York Deploys 220+ Boat Stewards to Inspect Watercraft Against Invasive Species
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has launched its annual campaign urging boaters to 'Clean. Drain. Dry.' all equipment before entering state waters to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS). This year, more than 220 boat launches will have watercraft inspection stewards, who have already conducted over 219,000 inspections in 2024, intercepting invasive plants and animals to protect local ecosystems and economies. Additionally, a new boat wash decontamination unit is planned for deployment at Cove Road Boat launch to further control AIS spread. Meanwhile, as Memorial Day approaches, attention is drawn to the often unseen struggles of military veterans, many of whom face substance use disorders and mental health challenges at higher rates than the general population. In New York State, veteran suicide rates remain nearly twice those of the general public, underscoring the need for greater recognition and support for these invisible wounds. These efforts reflect ongoing commitments to both environmental stewardship and veterans' health in the state.
