Mount Mercy and St Ambrose

Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids and St. Ambrose University in Davenport have entered a strategic combination agreement that will lead to their merger over the next two years. This agreement, signed by the presidents of both institutions, aims to enhance academic offerings and maintain distinct campus experiences while eventually placing Mount Mercy under St. Ambrose's leadership. The transition will begin with regulatory approvals expected by spring 2025, followed by an 18-month to two-year period during which both universities will operate independently. Although St. Ambrose is financially stronger, both institutions are seeking to collaboratively address the challenges facing higher education. The merger reflects a proactive approach to ensure long-term sustainability rather than a response to imminent closure threats. Students will continue to have access to programs at both campuses, including separate athletics under their respective mascots.
