Diver Dies in Lynch Superyacht Salvage Off Sicily

A 39-year-old Dutch diver died during preliminary salvage operations to recover the superyacht Bayesian, which sank off Porticello, Sicily, in August 2024 after being hit by a powerful downburst. The sinking led to the deaths of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, his daughter, and five others. The diver was underwater when the incident occurred, and the cause of death remains under official investigation. Around 70 specialists have been mobilized to raise the 56-meter vessel, with the main lifting operation expected later this month. Recovery of the yacht is considered crucial to understanding how the supposedly unsinkable vessel sank so quickly. The incident has highlighted the dangers associated with complex marine salvage work.
