An 87-year-old woman, Maria Leal, died following a suspected arson fire at the Swanson Court Apartments in Portage, Indiana, early Tuesday morning. The fire, which broke out around 12:10 a.m., prompted a quick response from local fire and police departments, who assisted in evacuating residents and rescued one individual trapped on a second-floor balcony. Leal was found in the ground-floor unit where the fire originated and later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Authorities have detained a suspect who allegedly made threats to burn the apartment during a prior argument and detected flammable liquids at the scene with the help of a K-9 unit. The suspect is currently being held on unrelated charges while the investigation into the fire continues. An autopsy is scheduled to confirm the cause of Leal's death.
