Calgary Police Officer Charged With Murder After 2023 Shooting

A Calgary police officer, Constable Craig Stothard, has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder following a shooting incident in May 2023. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) investigated the case after Stothard fired on a van’s occupants during a slow-speed pursuit on Memorial Drive, resulting in the deaths of two men, including Levon Boyce Jackson Fox, a member of the Goodstoney First Nation. The investigation revealed that the van was being driven erratically and dangerously by individuals reported as impaired and suspected of stealing the vehicle. ASIRT forwarded the case to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, which supported the charges, and Stothard was subsequently released on conditions pending court proceedings. ASIRT has stated it will not release further information while the case is before the courts. This incident has drawn significant attention due to the involvement of law enforcement in a fatal shooting during a police pursuit.
