Minister Declares McGregor Unfit for Ireland Presidency Amid Legal Challenge Plans
Transport Minister Darragh O'Brien has publicly stated that Conor McGregor would not be fit to serve as president of Ireland, comparing him unfavorably to the outgoing President Michael D Higgins, who has a distinguished 14-year record representing Ireland abroad. McGregor, a former MMA fighter, is considering a legal challenge to the existing nomination rules for the presidential election, which require candidates to be nominated by either 20 members of the Oireachtas or four local councils and be at least 35 years old. O'Brien acknowledged McGregor's right to challenge the process legally but emphasized that the Constitution and nomination procedures are clear, and he does not expect McGregor to secure the necessary nominations. The upcoming presidential election is scheduled before the end of Higgins' term on November 11, with candidates like Mairead McGuinness and Catherine Connolly already confirmed on the ballot. Other figures, such as Michael Flatley, Peter Casey, and businessman Gareth Sheridan, are also seeking nominations. McGregor has also faced recent legal controversies, including a civil case where he was found liable for assault, which may influence public and political perceptions of his suitability for the presidency.
