Sony, Netflix Develop Mitchells 2; Rianda Not Directing

Sony Pictures Animation is developing The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 with production expected to begin in January 2026 and Netflix set to distribute under a more collaborative licensing partnership as part of an expanding Sony–Netflix animation collaboration. Guillermo Martinez, the original film’s head of story, will make his directorial debut co-directing alongside JP Sans, and Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin are writing the screenplay; Phil Lord and Christopher Miller return as producers. Mike Rianda, who co-wrote and directed the first film, is not returning as director but is credited as an executive producer. Few plot details have been revealed beyond a continuation of the Mitchells' robot-versus-family premise, and the returning voice cast has not been confirmed. The sequel builds on the 2021 film’s critical success, including eight Annie Awards and an Academy Award nomination.
