Dearborn Schools Superintendent Maleyko Expected to Lead Michigan Education

Glenn M. Maleyko, the superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools, has been selected as Michigan’s next state superintendent of public instruction by the State Board of Education in a 5-3 vote. Maleyko, who has served in Dearborn since 2015 and has a long career as a teacher and administrator in the district, is expected to take over from Michael Rice, who is retiring in October. His appointment is pending contract negotiations and formal approval by the board in September. Maleyko's leadership is seen as crucial at a time when Michigan faces challenges in literacy and student performance, with state test scores declining and new reading reform legislation recently passed. Board members praised his collaborative style, experience with special education, and passion for public education, though the decision was somewhat divisive among board members. Maleyko’s appointment continues a tradition of Dearborn superintendents moving into the state role, following Brian Whiston, who served before Rice.
