Anurag Kashyap's film 'Dev D,' starring Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin, and Mahie Gill, faced significant challenges during its production. Kashyap revealed that many actresses refused to audition after reading the script, which led to one actress's boyfriend slapping him, calling the script vulgar. Despite these obstacles, the film was made due to the support of producer Ronnie Screwvala’s wife. Kashyap aimed to subvert the traditional narrative of 'Devdas,' giving more agency to the female characters and altering the story's famous ending. Although controversial, 'Dev D' became a cult hit, especially among the youth, and was praised for its distinctive soundtrack.
