OpenAI has launched the ChatGPT agent, an AI assistant capable of autonomously completing complex real-world tasks by combining web browsing, research, and conversational skills. The agent operates using its own virtual computer, enabling it to browse websites, run code, analyze data, and connect with user accounts such as Gmail and Google Drive. Users can supervise the agent, intervene or pause its actions at any time, and it requests permission before taking consequential steps. OpenAI claims the agent matches or exceeds human performance in various benchmarks and can handle multi-step workflows. The feature is initially available to ChatGPT Pro, Plus, and Team subscribers, with plans to expand access to enterprise and education customers. OpenAI cautions that the agent remains experimental and should not be used for high-stakes or highly sensitive tasks.
