The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) of India has approved the detailed project report for the 2,000 MW Sharavathy hydro pumped storage project in Karnataka, marking a significant step in enhancing the state's renewable energy infrastructure. This project, alongside the 600 MW Upper Indravati project in Odisha, aims to support energy security and balance grid stability amid fluctuating energy demands. The CEA has expedited the approval process by revising guidelines, which simplifies the preparation of detailed project reports and reduces the time required for project execution by up to eight months. Energy Minister KJ George emphasized the project's importance for both energy generation and irrigation, as it will efficiently reuse water resources. Furthermore, the CEA has received numerous proposals for additional pumped storage projects totaling around 60 GW, indicating a strong push towards renewable energy integration in India. These developments reflect the government's commitment to fast-tracking renewable energy initiatives to meet the country's growing energy needs.
