New Car Sales Surpass Pre-Pandemic Levels in Spain, UK Electric Vehicle Sales Hit Record

New car sales in multiple countries showed strong growth in September 2025, driven notably by surging demand for electric vehicles (EVs). In the UK, electric car registrations hit a record 72,779 units, representing 23.3% market share, helped by government grants and increased model availability, contributing to a 13.7% overall rise in new car sales compared to September 2024. Spain also experienced robust growth with 85,167 new passenger cars sold, a 16.4% increase year-over-year and the first month since the pandemic surpassing 2019 sales; electrified vehicles accounted for nearly a quarter of the market, growing by 97% in September alone. South Africa reported a 24.3% increase in new vehicle sales, led by models like the Toyota Hilux and Volkswagen Polo Vivo, marking the highest monthly total since 2015. These trends highlight a global shift towards electrification and recovery in the auto market following pandemic disruptions, supported by government incentives and expanding consumer choices.
