Petronas plans decommissioning of Sabah-Sarawak gas pipeline, over 150 wells

Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) announced plans to decommission the Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline (SSGP) as part of its activity outlook report for 2025-2027. The 500-km pipeline, operational since 2014, will see the plugging and abandonment of approximately 153 wells alongside the abandonment of 37 offshore facilities, including the SSGP itself. This decision follows previous incidents, including a leak that led to the suspension of gas supplies at the Dua Malaysia LNG terminal. Petronas aims to restore the area to a safe and environmentally stable condition while exploring potential repurposing of unused assets. Additionally, the company plans to continue drilling and implementing upstream projects to enhance production and energy security in the region. The decommissioning activities are part of broader efforts to address geohazard risks that have affected the pipeline's operations.
