Lindsey Oil Refinery Plans 125 Job Cuts Amid Administration
The Lindsey Oil Refinery in North Lincolnshire is facing significant job cuts, with approximately one-third of its workforce—125 out of 420 direct employees—set to be made redundant following the insolvency of its owner, Prax Group. Despite at least two bids to keep the refinery operational with a full workforce, the government has been criticized by the Unite union and its general secretary Sharon Graham for not providing support to maintain the site's operations, which would safeguard jobs and energy security. The refinery, one of only five large oil refineries remaining in the UK and responsible for 25% of the country's diesel supply, risks closure that would heighten reliance on imported fuel and harm the regional economy. The Insolvency Service has stated the redundancies were not decided lightly and assured support for affected employees, while investigations into the conduct of Prax's directors continue. Local union representatives warn the loss of skilled jobs will severely impact an already deprived area, and political debates around government promises on worker protection and net zero plans have intensified. The refinery remains under official receivership, with ongoing efforts to secure its sale and maintain safety at the site.
