South West, West Midlands receive £54m for active travel projects

The South West of England will receive £23.1 million in government funding to enhance walking, wheeling, and cycling infrastructure, part of a broader £291 million initiative by Active Travel England aimed at creating over 300 miles of new routes nationwide. This funding includes £7.1 million specifically earmarked for projects in Devon, Cornwall, and the Isles of Scilly, focusing on cycle tracks, footpaths, and safer road crossings. National Active Travel Commissioner Chris Boardman emphasized the health and environmental benefits of making active travel a convenient choice, likening the initiative to successful models in Europe. The projects are expected to encourage over 30 million additional journeys by bike or foot annually and contribute approximately £9 million to the local economy while reducing sick days linked to inactivity. Local Transport Minister Simon Lightwood highlighted the affordability and health advantages of walking and cycling, reinforcing the commitment to improving local transport infrastructure. This funding aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity and support local businesses across the region.
